Judge: No sanctions for questioning of slain teen’s mother

CHICAGO (AP) – A judge has refused to sanction the city of Chicago after one of its attorneys asked the mother of teenager shot by police officer if she conceived the victim while working as a prostitute.

Officer Robert Rialmo fatally shot 19-year-old Quintonio LeGrier after police responded to a domestic disturbance in 2015.

Rialmo has said he fired at LeGrier because the teen swung at him with a baseball bat. But a police disciplinary body found no evidence that LeGrier swung the bat at Rialmo.

A lawyer for LeGrier’s estate argued a lawyer representing the city of Chicago displayed “contemptible behavior” while questioning LeGrier’s mother, Janet Cooksey, during a deposition. Basileios Foutris said any allegation of prostitution was both baseless and irrelevant to the lawsuit filed by LeGrier’s estate.

Judge James O’Hara said he found the city’s actions “do not amount to sanctionable conduct.”

Foutris said his clients are disappointed, “but we respect the decision.”
