205 approves playground upgrades for Steele Elementary

The District 205 Board of Education approved the revamp work and playground upgrade for Steele Elementary School at Monday night’s board meeting.

District 205’s Assistant Superintendent for Finance and Operations Jennifer Hamm gave a brief explanation as to the work that was to be done for the upgrade.

“This will include the playground equipment… the installation and the rubber mulch, perimeter fencing around the site, and the concrete border that will keep everything in and will be permanent like we have at Silas.”

Discussion took place regarding using a pourable surface instead of rubber mulch, but Superintendent Dr. John Asplund said that there would need to be drainage work done or it would be money thrown away.

The school board also approved the commission of a new building study to be competed by Legat Architects.

Dr. Asplund told the board that administrators were led to re-examine the district’s building study through the community outreach meetings held last fall.

He said that administrators considered three architects to compete the building study, and in the end he gave a handful of reasons as to why they chose Legate.

“We really feel strongly that Legat will be a great partner,” said Asplund. “One, they have a wonderful history of successful building projects. Two they have a great process to engage with the staff and community to try to re-imagine these things and really put education at the focus of why we would make alterations to the building.

He added that Legate has offices in Moline, making them pretty close by.

The board also approved an intergovernmental agreement with the Knox-Warren Special Education District.

Due to a lack of staffing that many districts in Illinois has with various special education positions, the agreement is needed to make sure all students have services provided to them.

The board also approved the proposed board goals for the next school year. Asplund went over the time table for several of the board goals
