CHICAGO (AP) – An Illinois Attorney General’s office investigator is being honored for his capture of the suspect in the February shooting death of a Chicago police commander.
In a news release, the Illinois Fraternal Order of Police says it is giving its Valor Award to Investigator Thomas J. Symenski.
The release says Symenski was leaving the James R. Thompson Center in downtown Chicago on Feb. 13 when he heard gunfire and rushed to where he thought the shots had been fired. When he spotted the mortally wounded Commander Paul Bauer lying on the ground and a man later identified as Shomari Legghette walking nearby he captured Legghette. Legghette was later charged with first-degree murder.
The FOP Valor Award is presented to a law enforcement officer for bravery or heroism.
