GENEVA, Ill. (AP) – A suburban Chicago man has been sentenced to 86 years in prison for fatally shooting a man, then kidnapping his girlfriend and their baby and leading police on a 90 mph chase.
A Kane County jury convicted 30-year-old Alberto Sepeda of Elgin in May on first-degree murder charges for the 2016 death of 59-year-old Norbert Gutierrez. The (Arlington Heights) Daily Herald reports Kane County Judge John Barsanti on Monday called Sepeda’s claims of self-defense against the larger Gutierrez “illogical, unbelievable and self-serving.”
Witnesses testified Sepeda drove to a house where his girlfriend and infant daughter were staying and Gutierrez told him to leave. The two scuffled outside before Sepeda shot Gutierrez. Sepeda then went in the home and left with his girlfriend and baby at gunpoint.
Sepeda plans to appeal.
