CHICAGO (AP) – A Chicago man is accusing the city’s police of profiling and not doing their jobs after he was accosted by a gunman who accused him of trying to break into his car.
Twenty-year-old Jermayne Smith, an African-American, says he was headed to his car a little over a week ago after returning keys to a former employer when he was ordered to the ground by a man who identified himself as a police officer.
Smith told CBS-Chicago the man called police and at least ten squad cars showed up. He says they kept him on the ground, handcuffed him, and took the unidentified man with the gun around a corner. Moments later, police called the incident a misunderstanding and told Smith to ” `get out of here.”‘
Smith says all he can think about is how his life could have been over. He wants the gunman identified and has filed a complaint with the city’s Civilian Office Of Police Accountability.
A police spokesman confirms a report was made.
