URBANA, Ill. (AP) – A hotel near the University of Illinois’ main campus has been ordered closed because of a faulty fire-alarm system.
Urbana fire officials issued the order Wednesday for the 198-room Garden Hotel that’s in a commercial area just off Interstate 74.
The (Champaign) News-Gazette reports the city has been working with hotel management for several weeks on the problems with the fire-alarm system not communicating with the monitoring panel.
City Administrator Carol Mitten called the faulty system a “major life-safety hazard.”
Hotel owner Salim Hotelwala says he’s committed to replacing the fire-alarm system, project that could cost up to $90,000 and take at least three weeks. He says more than 20 employees will lose their jobs during the closure.
