CHICAGO (AP) – The Chicago-area’s commuter train service has launched its 13th annual poster and essay contest aimed at raising awareness about the hazards trains can pose.
A Monday statement from Metra says this year’s theme is, “Use Your Senses.” Winning posters will be featured prominently by Metra, including on its weekend passes. Metra CEO Jim Derwinski says the objective is to “prevent unnecessary tragedies.”
One first-, second- and third-place winner will be selected from each grade, K through 12. Prizes include an iPad for first-place winners. Forms and rules are available on Metra’s contest website . Participants must be living in or attending school in Metra’s six-county service area.
Federal statistics indicate 274 people died in railroad-crossing collisions nationwide last year. Another 512 died when struck by trains while trespassing on railroad property.
