Fulton County chase covers slew of miles, results in slew of charges

A high-speed police chase on Wednesday, October 31st that covered nearly a third of Fulton County and spanned over 70 miles ended with one man in jail with a slew of charges. At approximately 9:40 pm Wednesday, Illinois State Police attempted to stop a vehicle on US Route 24 and Clark Road in Fulton County for a headlight violation. The vehicle failed to stop then led officers on a chase south on Route 24 turned west on Route 136, then turned north back onto Route 24 onto Route 100 north. The vehicle then headed onto Route 78 through Bryant and St. David where it then turned south down Route 78 through Little America onto Route 24 east towards Glasford where the chase eventually ended. The driver voluntarily stopped and was apprehended by deputies. ISP was assisted by the Fulton County Sheriff’s Department, as well as the Canton and Glasford Police Departments. Speeds reached over 120 miles per hour. The driver was identified as 41-year-old David A. Bennett of Havana and was taken to the Fulton County Jail. Charges he faces, in addition to Illinois State Police offenses, include: aggravating fleeing and eluding, reckless driving, speeding 35 miles per hour over posted limits, operation with no insurance, expired registration, expired license of over a year, and several more. Bennett remains in Fulton County Jail awaiting his first appearance before a judge.
