Knox County voters head to the polls

The ads have been run, the doors have been knocked on and the candidates have made their case.

Now, it’s voters turn to have their say as residents across Knox County, Illinois and the nation make their way to the polls.

That is if they haven’t already, as Galesburg and the state as a whole have already passed records for early voting in a mid-term election.

Voters around the state will make decisions on races for Illinois Governor, Attorney General not to mention the offices of Comptroller, Treasurer and Secretary of State.

Locally there are a few key races we’re watching:

93rd State Representative, Republican Norine Hammond is attempting to ward off a challenge from Democrat John Curtis.

Curtis fell to Hammond when he challenged her just in 2016 by about nine points but with more experience, name recognition and money than last time, the tally could be closer this time.

Knox County will elect a sheriff, choosing between 11-year incumbent David Clague and challenger Kip Canfield, who both spent decades with the Galesburg Police Department.

Canfield’s challenge is the first Clague has faced since 2008, when he defeated Gary Ryner.

There’s also a competitive County Board race in all of the five districts. In order for Republicans to take control of the Board they would need to have 5 out of 6 of their candidates win.

In District 1 Republicans Patrick Harlan, and Dick Conklin are hoping to be one of the top two vote getters along with Democrat Cheryl Nache.

There are head to head contests in District 2 with Democrat John Hunigan and Republican Preston Johnson, District 3 with Democrat Tara Wilder against Republican Barb Foster, District Four with Democrat Brett Villareal against Republican Todd Olinger and District 5 which pits Republican Brian Friedrich against Democrat Josh Dean.

Polls are open in Knox County from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. and be sure to tune in to WGIL starting at 5 p.m. for Fox News coverage of what’s happening nationally and then at 7 p.m. as local results come in.
