Lawrence Lowery has gone home to be with his Lord. Known as “Larry” to his friends and “Buddy” to his family, Larry was born in Clanton, Alabama on December 6th, 1933 to Zackie Lowery and Lura Turner Lowery. Larry was the second of three children, having a sister (Jean Lowery Harrison) and a brother (Joe Earl Lowery, deceased). His mother died when he was four years old; his father died in 1990.
Larry graduated from Murphy High School in Mobile, Alabama in 1951. He enlisted in the United States Air Force and was a veteran of the Korean War. He went to college at the University of Louisiana in Lafayette, Louisiana, graduating in 1960. While in college, Larry met and married Mary Jane Myers Lowery. Larry had four children from this marriage: David (and Lori) Lowery of Suwanee, Georgia, Darrel Lowery of Georgetown, Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands, Elizabeth Lowery of Weaverville, North Carolina and Gus Lowery of Weaverville, North Carolina.
Larry later met and married Karen Gott Miller Lowery, with whom he shared 30 years of marriage. From this marriage, Larry gained two additional children: Troy Miller of Cameron, Illinois and Deborah (and Jeff) Thompson of Ashland, Illinois. Larry and Karen were true partners, helping each other succeed in their ventures, supporting each other at difficult times and sharing a deep love and respect throughout the marriage.
Larry is survived by four grandchildren: Kristen Lowery of Asheville, North Carolina, Eric Lowery of Chicago, Illinois, Kara Lowery of Knoxville, Tennessee and Gray Adaire Thompson of Ashland, Illinois.
Larry loved being an engineer and worked for Westinghouse as a field engineer, working on radar arrays until 1968. He transitioned to Illinois Power Company, holding multiple positions with that company until his retirement, including Relay and Test Instrument Engineer at the Clinton Power Plant, and Engineering Supervisor of the Galesburg Service Area.
Larry loved Brittany hunting dogs. He bred, trained and field-trialed his dogs, as well as hunting with them. He took many long walks to run them, nurturing his love of the outdoors as well as the dogs. Karen and Larry took many road trips together to field trial the Brittanies.
Larry was a founding member of Faith Baptist Church, serving as the Engineering Construction Leader when the church was built. He loved his Lord and his family and will be greatly missed.
