Here is a recap of tonight’s game from Brad Bennewitz:
“The Galesburg boys basketball team opened the season with a thrilling, blown-lead, then come-from-behind victory in overtime over Springfield Sacred Heart Griffin 87-84. The blown-lead part, Galesburg lead by 21 in the 2nd half, but the Cyclones scored 33 points in the 4th quarter, aided by 5 Galesburg turnovers and then 9/21 shooting performance at the free-throw line. The Cyclones rallied back, tied it at 75, we went to overtime, where the come-from-behind part for the Silver Streaks started, after Springfield Sacred Heart Griffin took a 5 point lead in the extra session, their biggest lead of the night 82-77.
“From that point forward, Galesburg outscored the Cyclones 10-2 and won it 87-84. How did they do that? Well, partially reversing their fortunes. After 5 4th quarter turnovers, Galesburg turned it over only once in the overtime. After the Cyclones turned the ball over not at all in the 4th quarter, the Silver Streaks forced 2 Sacred Heart Griffin turnovers late in the overtime. And after shooting just 9/21 at the free-throw line in the 4th quarter, Galesburg shot 9/10 in the overtime at the line.
“Keith Cunningham fouled out of the game and finished with a career high 28. Justin Endthoff, our Dave’s Auto Body Crunch Time Player of the Game, also a career high with 16. He knocked down a huge 3-pointer that cut that 5 point lead down to 3, had a big steal, and knocked down a couple of free-throws to help rally the Streaks in the overtime. Eric Price finished in double figures with 13. Jaylen McCants had a double double, 11 points and 10 rebounds. Quinn Anderson finished with 10.
“Sacred Heart Griffin also put 3 players in double figures, lead by Senior Nick Broeker who shot 12/17 from the field, and finished with 31 points.
“But it’s the Silver Streaks who prevail 87-84 in overtime. The Thanksgiving Tournament continues for the Silver Streaks on Friday, part of a full day schedule of basketball at John Thiel Gym. Galesburg will play Madison with an 11:06 pre-game on Friday morning and then the nightcap against Chicago Wells at 7:06 for our pre-game here on WGIL.”
