Group starts campaign to renovate Winnebago Town Hall

WINNEBAGO, Ill. (AP) – The old town hall in northern Illinois’ Winnebago Township is in line for a little sprucing up.

The Rockford Register Star reports that the Winnebago Community Historical Society is spearheading a campaign to raise $195,000 to renovate the building for use as a venue for community events.

Plans include removing a false ceiling, ripping out paneling, taking down a wall to expose a stage and installing handicapped-accessible bathrooms.

Historical society secretary Pat Wakeley says the group recognizes the renovation is “going to be a multiyear project.”

The township left the building in 2015 for new offices and later donated the town hall to the historical society.

So far, the historical society has paid about $15,000 for repairs that include new roofing, gutters, and downspouts.
