Lowman, Mary G.

Mrs. Mary G. Lowman, 86, of Galesburg, Illinois passed away at 1:47 am, Wednesday, January 9, 2019 at her home.Mary was born April 1, 1932 in Beloit, Wisconsin the daughter of John H. and Genevieve Clark Cullen. She married Frank D. Lowman on June 20, 1967 at Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Galesburg. He preceded her in death on February 10, 1996. Mary is survived by several nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two brothers, John Cullen and Dennis Quinn Cullen and her sister, Jean Ann Cullen Miller. Mary graduated from Corpus Christi Catholic High School in 1950. She received her B.A. from the University of St. Francis in Joliet and earned her Masters from Northwestern University. Mary attended the Chicago Art Institute, the American Academy of Fine Arts, Chicago Academy of Fine Art. Mary taught art and gifted art programs to kindergarten to eighth grade. She also taught creative writing to farm school first and second graders. Mary taught 17 years for District 81 and 13 years for District 205. Upon retiring from teaching Mary undertook a second career-PAINTING, working full-time since 1986. She said, “It’s like swimming, after you quit practicing it takes you a long time to get your stroke back.” She pursued her craft until her death on January 9, 2019. Mary was a member of the Galesburg Civic Art Center, the Peoria Art Guild, Studios Illinois, the Quad Cities Center for the Arts, Knox County Retired Teachers Association and the National Education Association.

Memorial Visitation will be 10:00-Noon Saturday, January 12, 2019 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Funeral Directors and Cremation Services, Galesburg. Cremation will be accorded. Burial will be at a later date in St. Joseph Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Knox County Humane Society or to the Galesburg Civic Art Center Children Programing.
