Jailhouse informants to play key role in police murder trial

CHICAGO (AP) – Jailhouse informants may play a crucial role in the murder trial of a 31-year-old man who was charged in the shooting death of an off-duty Chicago police officer after he allegedly bragged about the killing while he was locked up.

The trial that’s set to begin this week for Anton Carter in the 2010 slaying of 62-year-old Michael Bailey. Bailey was shot in front of his house while washing the car he’d bought himself as a gift for his pending retirement.

The informants came forward in 2011 and the Chicago Tribune reports that as many as five of them may testify.

Carter is only going to trial now, in part because prosecutors wanted him to try him first in a carjacking. Carter, who also spells his first name Antwon, was convicted.
