Here is a recap of tonight’s game from WGIL’s Brad Bennewitz:
“The Galesburg Boys Basketball team advances in the Class 3A Regional with a hard fought battle. A 53-46 victory over the Kewanee Boilermakers, led by Nick Fields, a career game, 14 points, 10 rebounds, a double double, for the Streaks senior who was our Dave’s Autobody Crunch Time Player of the Game. Keith Cunningham, also a big night, a double double, 12 points and 13 rebounds, and Jaylin McCants finished in double figures with 12 as well. The game was marked by a couple of runs. Kewanee got off to a big start early 11-2, and with under 3 minutes to go the Silver Streaks called a time-out but still trailed by 7 late in the 1st quarter, when Kewanee turned the ball over with a length of the court pass that went into the rafters. That gave the ball back to the Silver Streaks on their own baseline with six tenths of a second to go and on the in-bound Justin Endthoff hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer. That cut the deficit to 4 but was part of a 9-0 Silver Streaks run that gave them their first lead of the game. Then down 3 late in the 2nd quarter, the Silver Streaks scored the last 7 of the 2nd quarter and opened the 3rd quarter on a 12-2 run and the Silver Streaks were in control the rest of the way, but Kewanee never completely went away.
“Galesburg advances with an 18-12 record. They will take on 2nd seeded Dixon in the Regional Championship game at Geneseo on Friday night. We’ll have that one here on WGIL at about 6:35pm for the pre-game, 7pm for the tip-off. Kewanee ends the season at 13-17. They’ll drop back into 2A next year, with a team that brings back all but one of it’s players.”
