A Galesburg Police Officer who had some pretty good intuition the day of a robbery last year at the Fremont Street Walgreens is the Galesburg-Area CrimeStoppers Officer of the Year.

Officer Patrick Ruggles received the award Tuesday at the monthly board meeting for the local CrimeStoppers Chapter.

According to a nomination form, Ruggles was one of a number of officers who responded to the Walgreens robbery last September tenth and happened to follow a vehicle near the area that was traveling at a high rate of speed, thinking it might have been connected to the robbery — and, it turns out, he was right.

Eighteen-year-olds Gates Sisk and Davia Barbee were eventually arrested. The two along with a third suspect are also accused of being part of an armed robbery ring in the Indianapolis area.

The nomination form says, Ruggles “went above and beyond on this night to make this community, along with other communities in the Midwest, a safer place.”

Sisk and Barbee, meanwhile, face federal charges and have trials scheduled for early June.
