Galesburg City Council tonight, in their last meeting before tomorrow’s consolidated municipal elections, will discuss adding several four-hour parking spots to a downtown lot.

It would designate eight current parking spots as four-hour limited parking for the purpose of serving local businesses.

Council documents cite the Discovery Depot’s recent expansion and the growing vitality of other nearby businesses as a catalyst. They are the eight Northeastern most spots in Parking Lot I.

Even though it is a city-owned lot, many residents probably consider it parking for the Amtrak station, since it’s often used by train passengers.

Limiting parking in these spots to four-hours will discourage long term parking, making them more amenable for downtown patrons.

The administration says longer-term solutions for the parking scarcity in the area could be in the works but they would like public feedback and additional study before pursuing any of those.
