Three new faces could be sitting on the Galesburg City Council once all the votes are certified.

In Ward One, Bradley Hix defeated incumbent Angela Bastian by a 61 vote margin, the biggest differential of the contested races for aldermen.

“I did spend a lot of time going door-to-door,” says Hix.  “I knocked on doors two — sometimes three — times, to make sure I met the voters”

Lindsay Hillery defeated incumbent Russell Fleming in Ward Three by the narrowest margin, just two votes, 72 to 70.

She tells WGIL that her first priority on the job will be familiarizing herself with city government.  “Educating myself on the budget and a lot of stuff I don’t know yet,” says Hillery.  “[I’ll be] just getting familiar with how things work, and just seeing what I can do.  I’m excited.”

In Ward Seven, where there was no incumbent, former director of public works Larry Cox defeated Ashley Worby by a narrow margin, 178 to 171.

“I think it was my experience, and the people who know me, voted for me.  So I appreciate that,” says Cox, who also confessed to doing not a lot of campaigning.

Peter Schwartzman was unopposed in Ward 5.

Attempts to contact Bastian, Fleming, and Worby were unsuccessful.

New aldermen will be seated next month.

The Galesburg Election Commission must still certify the results and count any absentee ballots.  Voter turnout in Galesburg was less than eight percent.
