Funeral set for Illinois trooper killed by wrong-way driver

GRAYSLAKE, Ill. (AP) – A funeral is set for an Illinois State Police trooper who was killed by a wrong-way driver.

Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker is to be among the mourners Friday at Trooper Gerald Ellis’ funeral in Grayslake. Ellis died early Saturday when his squad car was struck by a wrong-way driver on Interstate 94. He is the third state trooper to die in a traffic crash so far this year.

On Thursday, hundreds of law enforcement officers honored Ellis at a visitation, some coming from as far away as Virginia and Louisiana. The Illinois Senate held a moment of silence for Ellis on Wednesday.

Ellis was an 11-year state police veteran with District 15 in Downers Grove. He was a U.S. military veteran and had a wife and two children.
