The newly elected Abingdon-Avon school board was seated at last night’s meeting.

A ceremony was held before the meeting to celebrate the incoming and outgoing members and their families. The celebration was put on by the district, the Abingdon-Avon Education Association, and Abingdon-Avon Teachers Association.

The first order of business? The new board elected their leadership and they went with experience for the positions.

Anthony Brooks, fresh of his re-election bid, was chosen to serve as President of the Board of Education unanimously. Frank Quinn was selected to serve as Vice President and Frank Craver will serve as Secretary.

The board also heard a presentation from Superintendent Mike Curry on the timeline for the amended budget, which is expected to tentatively be ready in May for the board’s approval in June.

Curry tells WGIL that not all districts choose to amend their budget, but it’s a cleaner process because you’re not projecting the year.

“It’s just like going through the whole process again, that you do in October. Except you have hard numbers now. It’s not a difficult process. It’s just a cleaner set of records than what you’re guessing in October and everyone’s guessing in October.”

The new board, once seated, took action on approving bids for roof work at Hedding Grade School and the High School.

The bid for Hedding from Frank Millard Roofing came in at $766,800 while the bid for the High School’s was at $1,077, 260 from Sterling Commercial Roofing.
