Illinois police say teen’s claim she was stabbed was hoax

WEST CHICAGO, Ill. (AP) – Authorities say a 16-year-old girl’s claim that she was stabbed while walking on a trail at a west-suburban Chicago forest preserve was a hoax.

DuPage County Forest Preserve Police said Wednesday that the girl originally told authorities she was attacked Tuesday while walking at Timber Ridge Forest Preserve in West Chicago. Police say the girl later admitted she made a false report to investigators who were trying to question her for more information. Police say she told investigators the injuries she suffered were self-inflicted and she made up details about the attack.

The DuPage County Forest Preserve District’s police juvenile department will handle the case. Police say the district’s trails and preserves are safe but they ask visitors to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activity.
