Northgate Lanes closed, state claims tax law violations

UPDATED A longtime Galesburg bowling alley is closing again, not long after it re-opened following a summer break.

A sign posted Tuesday on the front door of Northgate Lanes on North Henderson Street indicates they will not be opening up again.

The sign says Northgate remains for sale, and that the closure does not impact Acapulco restaurant, which is attached to the alley.

Tuesday’s sign says anyone who was renting locker space at Northgate must go there to get their belongings tomorrow from one to five pm, or Saturday from one to four pm.

The sign also says that the staff and ownership “are saddened by this turn of events.”

Sources Monday sent WGIL a separate posting at the business indicating that Northgate’s certificate of registration had been revoked by the Illinois Department of Revenue. The agency says in an e-mail to WGIL that was due to non-compliance with tax laws, but declined to explain further, citing confidentiality.

Northgate Lanes had been in operation for 61 years. For now, local bowling leagues will likely have to find another place to play, and the Galesburg High School bowling team now doesn’t have a place to hold home meets.
