What seemed almost improbable, just about became the possible. But not quite enough for the Galesburg football team, which scored 26 unanswered points after falling behind to Quincy 32-0. But then just ran out of time and ended up falling at the Blue Devils, 32-26.
It all started because of the Silver Streaks defense. In the 3rd quarter, Jordan Payne created a fumble which the Silver Streaks turned into an offensive touchdown with a pass play from Conner Aten to Dre Egipciaco. Then the Streaks created another turnover as Dillon McBride intercepted the ball in the end zone to deny a Quincy score. Two plays later, it was Aten to Egipciaco again for 83-yards and a touchdown. Then Aaron Carl with a strip sack and a return for 42-yards to get the Streaks within two touchdowns. And then Kannon Kleine had an interception that gave the Streaks the ball back, which Conner Aten eventually ran in a 10-yard score to pull the Streaks within 6 points.
Galesburg even got the ball back one more time due to clock mismanagement by Quincy allowed the Silver Streaks one more crack at getting the win. With five seconds remaining, a pass play downfield was knocked down by Quincy. And that’s how close Galesburg came to a nearly impossible comeback.
At the end though, the Silver Streaks are now 1-3 overall and 0-2 in the Western Big 6 Conference, losing both conference games by just one touchdown.
The WGIL broadcast team awarded both Jordan Payne and Aaron Carl with the Dave’s Autobody Crunch-Time Player of the Game honor.
