Here is a recap of the game from WGIL’s Brad Bennewitz:
Yet another close call for the Galesburg High School football team and yet another tough, tough loss. This time, 24-21 on Homecoming to Rock Island in overtime.
Galesburg had a 13-0 lead at halftime. They had a touchdown pass from Sophomore quarterback Grant Aten to Sophomore receiver Dre Egipciaco. Then Aten ran in a 1-yard touchdown for the 13-0 score at halftime. But Rock Island came out fast in the 2nd half with a 74-yard scoring drive right out of the gate to begin the 3rd quarter. They then held Galesburg to three plays and out, and then with a trick play, Rock Island took the lead with a 54-yard wide receiver pass to go up 14-13. Eventually the Rocks took a 21-13 lead before the Silver Streaks rallied. Again, Aten to Egipciaco for a 71-yard touchdown, and then Aten ran in the 2-point conversion to tie it at 21-21 before end of regulation.
The Silver Streaks had the ball in the first possession of the overtime, but they couldn’t punch it in from the 1-yard line on 4th down. Rock Island took over for their shot at scoring in the overtime. The Rocks also could not get into the end zone, but they went for the field goal on 4th down, which was good from 20-yards out. Victor Guzman had the game-winning field goal.
The Dave’s Autobody Crunch-Time Player of the Game was awarded to Dre Egipciago, who had three receptions, two touchdowns, including a clutch TD near the end of regulation, and a total of 108 yards.
So now the Silver Streaks have lost four games, all of them by one possession. Two by seven points, one by six, and this time by three points. That’s how close this 1-4 team is to being 5-0. But, they have to swallow the bitter pill and get ready for a road trip to Moline Friday (10/04/19) night.
The freshmen did win the preliminary game. They held Rock Island out of the end zone on the extra point attempt and the Streaks prevail, 25-24. The freshmen are now 4-1 on the season.
