Allen LeRoy Meyer Sr., 79 of Abingdon, passed away at 8 a.m. Thursday, October 3, 2019, at his home with his family at his bedside. He was born May 3, 1940, in Guttenberg, Iowa, the son of Ewald and Myrtle (Brown) Meyer. He married Helen M. Shaw on October 13, 1962, in McGregor, Iowa.

Allen is survived by his loving wife of almost 57 years, Helen; four sons, Allen (and Marilee) Meyer Jr. of Abingdon, Paul (and Laurie) Meyer of Alpha, Rex (and Patsy) Meyer of Gilson and Chris (and Teri Dawn Harrison) Meyer of Abingdon; three daughters, Julie (and Ed) Peak of Abingdon, Dawn (and Tim) Presley of Abingdon and Mary (and Troy) Fowler of Abingdon; ten grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Leon (and Joan) Meyer of Wisconsin and Robert Meyer of Iowa. He was preceded in death by his parents, his stepfather Elmer Fields, one grandson Hank Meyer, and three sisters Dorothy, Donna, and Janie.

He had lived in the Abingdon area most of his married life. He worked as a janitor for the Hedding Grade School, Abingdon School District #217 from 1984 until retiring in 2002. He had also worked as a carpenter, farmer and he worked at the Kendrick Sawmill in Abingdon. He could also “Fix” anything. He mowed several yards in Abingdon after his retirement. His hobbies included hunting, fishing, and camping at the Knox County Conservation and Sportsmen’s Club. But most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his family. Cremation will be accorded. The celebration of life will be held at a later date. Hinchliff-Pearson-West Funeral Directors and Cremation Services Abingdon Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements.
