It was a game of resilience. Resilience is what turned the tide for the Galesburg Silver Streaks football team in their first Western Big 6 Conference victory and second victory of the season, 36-34 over the United Township Panthers.
The game was tied just before halftime, but then the Silver Streaks were able to put together a 93-yard scoring drive, which was capped off with a 64-yard touchdown pass from Grant Aten to Dre Egipciaco.
Galesburg had the ball to begin the 3rd quarter in hopes of building on the lead, but Grant Aten was intercepted for a pick-six. And then an interception just a few plays later set-up another United Township score, which gave the Panthers a 28-21 lead going into the 4th quarter.
But the Silver Streaks rallied back with a 15-play scoring drive that took over six minutes and was capped off by a Dillon McBride 5-yard touchdown run. The Streaks went for the 2-point conversion with a QB sneak by Aten, which gave Galesburg a 1-point lead. Then U-T fumbled the kick-off giving the Streaks the ball back. An Aten to Egipciaco 21-yard touchdown pass plus the extra point put Galesburg up 36-28.
The Panthers weren’t done though. They put together a 10-play scoring drive which got them within 2-points with just under 40 seconds to go in the game. As United Township went for the 2-point conversion, Galesburg’s Dillon McBride on defense cut the edge and kept them from sweeping to the outside and getting into the end zone. The Streaks held on for the win, 36-34.
For that defensive play, Dillon McBride was awarded the Dave’s Autobody Crunch-Time Player of the Game. He also finished with 173-yards rushing and two touchdowns.
The Galesburg Freshmen were winners as well over United Township, 41-0.
