No class for 9th day as Chicago teachers strike

CHICAGO (AP) –  The nation’s third-largest school district is canceling classes Tuesday, marking the ninth day of a strike by Chicago teachers.

Chicago Public Schools officials announced the decision on Monday afternoon.

The district and the Chicago Teachers Union reported some progress late last week but talks stalled over the weekend, keeping classrooms closed for more than 300,000 students.

Both sides signaled Monday that they remain at odds over demands for smaller classes and more staff.

More than 25,000 teachers walked out of schools starting on Oct. 17. The walkout has surpassed the length of a 2012 teachers’ strike.
