No. 15 DePaul women hold off upset-minded St. John’s 74-69

CHICAGO (AP) — Sonya Morris and Deja Church notched double-doubles and No. 15 DePaul rallied in the fourth quarter to beat St. John’s 74-69 on Sunday.

Morris scored 13 of her 17 points in the first half and grabbed 11 rebounds for the Blue Demons (15-2, 5-0 Big East Conference). Church added 15 points and 10 rebounds as DePaul earned its sixth straight win.

St John’s (10-7, 3-3) trailed 40-34 at halftime, but the Red Storm held DePaul to seven third-quarter points and took a 50-47 lead into the final period.

Lexi Held, who scored nine of her 10 points in the second half, made two free throws with 4:05 remaining in the game to pull the Blue Demons even at 61. From there, Morris and Church both hit two free throws and a layup and DePaul stayed in front.

Qadashah Hoppie topped St. John’s with 20 points and Alissa Alston scored 19, but the duo combined to make just 13 of 37 shots as the Red Storm shot 36% from the floor (23 of 64). Leilani Correa pitched in with 16 points and eight rebounds. Both Alston and Correa fouled out.

Kelly Campbell, who leads the nation in assist-to-turnover ratio, had five assists and no turnovers for DePaul. She added 10 rebounds to go with eight points. Chante Stonewall scored 15.
