Galesburg City Council

Galesburg Aldermen Tuesday night, on the day after the Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday, is expected to adopt a resolution designed to bridge divides between the police and people of color.

Council can adopt the Ten Shared Principles of the Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.

Examples of the principles include; fostering strong relationships at both the leadership and street level, requiring de-escalation training, and support for diversity in law enforcement.

The ILACP and the NAACP formally adopted a resolution of shared principles designed to bridge the gap of mistrust between police and communities of color back in March of 2018.

The two statewide associations vowed by mutual affirmation to work together and stand together to implement these values and principles and to replace mistrust with mutual trust.

Another slate of demolitions is up for aldermen to decide on.

All are dilapidated residential properties, in areas such as Locust Street, Harding Street and a pair of properties on Emery Street.

The request before council tonight is to approve moving forward with legal action in order to obtain an order for demolition.

Aldermen also can approve the designation of seven parking spaces in City Lot A as two-hour timed parking.

Parking Lot A is behind Charred 51 Bistro and across the street from First Presbyterian Church.

Currently, there are 18 two-hour parking limit spaces on the southeast side of the lot that were implemented in 2009 to help alleviate a similar issue of low turnover in parking spaces in the lot.

City staff performed a recent parking survey of the lot and determined that the east half has few available spots throughout the day while the west portion typically has available parking.

The additional two-hour time limit spaces will be installed in the eastern half of the lot
