A pedestrian was struck and killed by a train on BNSF tracks Monday night according to Galesburg Police.
Officers responded to the crossing at the 100 block of Academy Street around 8 p.m. for a report of a pedestrian being struck.
Officers quickly located a deceased individual on the tracks when they arrived.
Members of the train crew told police they observed the person approach the crossing and lay down on the tracks as the train was approaching.
The crew applied emergency brakes but was not able to stop the train prior to striking the victim.
The identity of the victim is being withheld pending the notification of family.
