Judge rules man won’t get new trial in torture-tainted case

CHICAGO (AP) – A judge has reinstated the murder conviction of a Chicago man that was overturned on his claims he was tortured into a false murder confession by a notorious police commander. Cook County Circuit Judge Thomas Hennelly on Friday reinstated Gerald Reed’s 1990 conviction and life sentence for a double homicide. The ruling comes as the 56-year-old Reed and prosecutors prepared for retrial of the case. Reed’s conviction was overturned in 2018 after he asserted he had been abused by detectives under Burge’s command. Hennelly ruled Reed’s confession was never used against him during trial, so his rights were never violated.
