Pritzker: Stay-home lawsuit a ‘stunt,’ should be overturned

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) – The Illinois governor says a statewide stay-at-home order aimed at stemming the spread of the coronavirus remains in place through May 30. Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s announcement Tuesday followed a southern Illinois judge’s ruling that the Democrat exceeded his authority with the executive decree. The state attorney general plans to appeal the ruling by Clay County Circuit Judge Michael McHaney that Pritzker’s order violates civil liberties. Pritzker’s lawyers note that the Illinois General Assembly hasn’t objected to the extension and said the “urgent circumstances” demanded urgent action. Pritzker says the emergency actions have and continue to prevent “thousands of deaths.”
