Communities in several area school districts are doing what they can to salute the Class of 2020, who are going through a senior year they never expected.

With schools shut down to in-person classes and graduation ceremonies being canceled or moved to virtual, the senior class is never going to forget this strange year.

The United School District is doing what they can for the seniors this year, including holding a special celebration at the high school campus Friday night where the public can cheer on the senior class.

“We’re doing another ‘Friday Night Lights’ drive-through parade type of thing but this one is in honor of our seniors. We’ll have our social distance guidelines out. Everybody drives through — nobody gets out of their car.”

Whitsitt says that seniors will maintain social distance while standing along the high school’s bus ramp as the public comes driving through to congratulate them.

Additionally, he says the senior class of his school has been taking part in a video compilation of graduates accepting their diplomas.

“We get a picture in their cap and gown and then we get a picture of them on our stage with their parents giving them their diploma — not any of us. Then we video them walking across the stage and then our tech department is going to put together a compilation video when it’s all said and done.”

Whitsitt says that the parents understand what’s going on. He says he’s very appreciative that no one is ‘balking’ at the school’s mask requirements.

The district also has an audio ceremony recorded, including recorded speeches, that will air on the radio stations in Monmouth.
