CHICAGO (AP) – Chicago’s mayor halted a demolition planned at a coal plant amid concern that another dust cloud could cover parts of a Chicago neighborhood as it did after an implosion at the site in April.
Mayor Lori Lightfoot made the announcement Thursday after a group of aldermen and neighborhood leaders protested outside her Logan Square home.
Earlier that day, Lightfoot’s administration said it would authorize demolition of a structure at the plant because the building poses a safety hazard.
Aldermen George Cardenas and Mike Rodriguez, who represent parts of the Little Village neighborhood, say they did not support a demolition.
