Up to $700 is available for qualifying students of Carl Sandburg College as part of the Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund, a portion of the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act.

In a release from the community college, they say that Sandburg was awarded a total of $1,172,052 through the act, and 50 percent of those funds must be used to provide students with emergency financial aid grants.

Qualifying students enrolled in at least 10 credit hours as of March 20 were awarded $700 each and students enrolled in nine or fewer credit hours as of March 20 could receive $350. A total of 1,015 Sandburg students meet the DOE qualifications.

Eligible students did not have to take any action to receive these federal funds. Students who signed up for direct deposit through Sandburg had their funds deposited into their bank account. For those without direct deposit, a check was mailed to their local address on file with the College.

Sandburg’s President, Dr. Seamus Reilly, says, “We are very grateful for the support of the Department of Education in helping our students deal with the disruption caused by the COVID-19 virus.”

“We are also thankful to others in the state and community who have contributed to the Carl Sandburg College Foundation to provide some support for those students not covered by the CARES Act. This support makes it possible for our students to succeed.”

Another $9,326 of CARES Act funds allocated to Sandburg will be awarded to students in need through crisis grants from the Carl Sandburg College Foundation, which has set a goal of raising an additional $50,000 to assist students’ emergency needs.
