Arthur Clayton Atwood III, 80 of Abingdon and formerly of Decatur, Illinois, passed away at 5 p.m. Friday, May 15, 2020, at the home of his daughter, Renee.

He was born February 28, 1940, in Decatur, the son of Howard Clayton Atwood and Betty Rose (Morstetter) Atwood. He married Nancy Kay Yates in 1963 and they later divorced.

Arthur is survived by two daughters, Loris Renee Atwood of Abingdon and Jeri Lynn (and Kevin) Galloway of Henderson; one son, Arthur Clayton Atwood, Jr. of Abingdon; 8 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren; and one brother Larry Shayne (and Phyllis) Atwood of Latham.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother Brian Dale “Duke” Atwood.

He attended schools in Decatur. He joined the Navy and served aboard the USS Ranger as a gunman and was stationed at Norfolk, Virginia. He owned and operated Atwood Construction in Decatur with his brother, Larry. His son continues the Atwood Construction business in Abingdon. He had also worked as a block layer, concrete finisher, and was a home builder. He was a member of the Pilgrim Lutheran Church. He loved to go boating and in his early years, he enjoyed fishing and hunting.

Cremation will be accorded. Due to social distancing limitations related to the COVID-19 pandemic, a time to celebrate his life will be held at a later date.
