Peaceful Public Square protest planned for Saturday, May 30th in Galesburg over the death of George Floyd

The number of protests across the nation is growing over the death of George Floyd, an unarmed black man, at the hands of police officers in Minneapolis. Saturday, May 30th some in Galesburg will join the protest at 10 a.m. on the Public Square. The protest is slated to last an hour, from 10:00 am to 11:00 am. It’s being organized on social media by Knox College student Autumn Culver and Carl Sandburg College graduate Dakota Williams. It is being described as a peaceful protest saying: “We will be holding a peaceful protest to bring awareness to police brutality and the mistreatment of minorities in this country. Additionally, we demand that the officers responsible for George Floyd’s death be charged with murder. We will meet at 10:00 am on the square on Main street and protest. Wear a black shirt and bring a mask. Feel free to bring your own sign as well.” As of early this morning, according to Facebook, the post has reached over 170 people with over 50 people planning to attend. Culver and Williams told the Register-Mail they do not support the looting and violence taking place in Minneapolis.
