Galesburg City Council

Galesburg City Council approved on Monday a professional services agreement with Klingner and Associates to study a downtown property.
The vote to approve was 6-0.

The purpose of studying 140-144 E. Main St. in downtown is to gather information on demolition and the effects it would have on neighboring buildings.

City Manager Todd Thompson says their services will include determining walls on the east and west side are independent.

Klingner’s work will also consist of an opinion on probable cost for demolition, potential structural repairs that may be necessary to remaining walls, and an opinion of probable cost for providing a finishing system to the remaining walls that would be left exposed after demolition.

The Council in September authorized city staff to purchase the property after it was burned and essentially left alone for six years.

Council also approved on Monday taking the next legal steps in demolishing a bundle of rundown properties around town.

The cost for the buildings to be torn down would run from $8,000 – $18,000.

Thompson says all these homeowners have been warned of their violation of city code and have not adequately responded.
