Barbara R. (Matteson) Engstrom, 83, died on Sunday, August 16, 2020, at 3:50 AM, at Knox County Nursing Home, Knoxville.

Barbara was born on December 24, 1936, at her grandparents’ farm in Roseville. She was the daughter of Fred W. and Helen I. (Poland) Matteson. She married Roger Hank in 1956. Barbara later married Paul T. Engstrom on June 21, 1969, at Faith United Presbyterian Church in Monmouth. Together, they celebrated 51 years of marriage. Barbara is survived by her children, Nancy (Kevin) Terpening of Knoxville, James Engstrom (Wendy Bickell) of Galesburg, and Alexander “Andy” (Tracy) Engstrom of Abingdon; five grandchildren, Ashleigh Engstrom, Jayme Engstrom, Addison Engstrom, Karl (Bailey Austin) Terpening and Paul (Kaylin) Terpening; four great-grandchildren, Billy, Elijah, Xander, and Kyleigh; siblings, Carole (Thomas) Melton and Theodore (Vera) Matteson; and her best friend, Patricia Anne Moore-Corben. She was preceded in death by her parents; loving husband, Paul; daughter and son-in-law, Kathryn and Ross Langwell; and siblings, Pauline Vaughn-Cahoon, Robert “Tommy” Matteson.

Barbara was a 1954 graduate of Alexis High School. She worked at Fred Hopkins Drug Store while in school. After school, she went on to work as a Farm Advisor for Warren County Extension Office; Keister’s Tire Center; O’Brien Chevrolet (which would later become Bruce Foote); Huskey Built Manufacturing. She would retire from Security Savings and Loan, where she worked as a Loan Processor. Barbara was a member of the Grace Lutheran Church in Knoxville. She loved to spend time with her family and friends. She was deeply loved and will be forever missed.

Visitation will be held from 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM, Monday, August 24, 2020, at Hurd-Hendricks Funeral Homes and Crematory. Funeral Services will follow directly after visitation on Monday, August 24, 2020, at 12:00 PM at the funeral home. Rev. Tucker O’Neal will officiate. Graveside services for both Barbara and Paul will follow funeral services at Knoxville Cemetery. Military rites will be accorded at the graveside.
