Longtime Galesburg City Clerk, Anita Carlton dies at 83

A long time public servant of Galesburg passed away Wednesday.

Anita Carlton, who served as the Galesburg City Clerk for 26 years, was the Executive Director of the Galesburg Election Commission, and was the campaign chair for the United Way of Knox County for two consecutive years, died at the age of 83 at Seminary Manor Nursing Home.

Carlton was born in Galesburg in 1937, graduating from Galesburg High School in 1955.

She was an avid volunteer for many organizations, including the Galesburg Woman’s Club, League of Women Voters, Churchill Parents Club, the Cameo Club, and she served on the Board of Directors of Leadership Greater Galesburg.

She received the prestigious Thomas B. Herring Community Award and was voted the Progressive Woman of the Month for The Paper.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband: Jack L. Carlton, and her sister, Edith Swigart.

She is survived by her children, Pamela (Mike) Pettyjohn of Tampa, Florida, and David Carlton of Galesburg and one sister, Anne (Darrel) Liniger of Monmouth, Illinois.

Funeral Services are scheduled for 3:00 pm Saturday, August 22, 2020, at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Funeral Directors and Cremation Services Galesburg Chapel with Rev. Tom Ek officiating.

Visitation will be from 2:00-3:00 pm Saturday at the chapel. Cremation will follow services and her husband will be scattered in the East Linwood Cemetery Scattering Gardens.
