The Monmouth City Council on Monday approved resurfacing a portion of East Euclid Street.

The Maple City had received a Community Development Block Grant to replace a water main on Euclid earlier in the year and the next stage of that project is to resurface the roadway.

City Administrator Lew Steinbrecher tells WGIL that work will see Euclid rebuilt across five city blocks.

“The new section of the water main runs along East Euclid from First Street to Sixth Street and that portion of the roadway will be completely resurfaced as part of the bid.”

Gunther Construction was awarded the project with a bid of over $330,000.

The CDBG grant covered the water main work but does not cover roadway resurfacing so the city will be utilizing the highly restricted Motor Fuel Tax revenue to fund this stage of the project.

In other action, aldermen approved scheduling the public hearing for September 21st at 5:00 pm to be held at the City Council chambers.

Steinbrecher says that the city established a business district on the property that the new Love’s Travel Stop is located as a means to help generate revenue to repay Love’s for extending the water and sewer lines and upgrading the roads.

“So, we’re taking that concept and applying it to other geographical areas of the city where, again, the intent would be to use this economic development tool to attract new businesses. To entice new private investments, create jobs, and, of course, increase revenues for the city.”

Due to COVID-19 considerations, there will also be a dial-in phone number provided for public comment.

Mayor Rod Davies also spoke to the council about live streaming meetings onto social media pages to improve citizen engagement and to accommodate attendance during the pandemic.
