Pair of bridges getting work beginning Monday

The Illinois Department of Transportation is announcing that a couple of bridges in the area are getting some work starting on Monday, September 21.

IDOT says that travelers taking Interstate 74 in both directions over French Creek, about five miles west of Brimfield in Knox County, will see intermittent full closures beginning at 10:00 p.m. with work expected to be completed by 6:00 a.m. the next day.

The transportation department says that crews will be placing new bridge beams. Dynamic message signs will be in place to remind motorists of the closures and Illinois State Police will be present before closures begin.

Also starting on Monday, IDOT will be making repairs to the bridge that carries Illinois 94 over Honey Creek, about 1.5 miles south of Stronghurst in Henderson County.

The indication is that this project will last longer than a single night, expected to be complete next month. During this time, the bridge will be reduced to one lane during the work and traffic will be controlled by temporary signals.

In both cases, IDOT says that motorists should expect delays and allow extra time for trips through the area or avoid the work area by using alternate routes. Drivers are urged to pay attention to changing conditions and signs in the work zones, obey posted speed limits, not to use mobile devices, and be on alert for workers and equipment.

Both projects are part of IDOT’s Rebuild Illinois capital program, which will see $33.2 billion invested in all modes of transportation. The first year will see 1,706 miles of highway, 128 bridges, and 228 additional safety improvements made.
