Emily Sutton is running as a Democrat for a full term on the 9th Circuit Court’s bench after she was appointed to fill the remainder of Judge Paul Mangieri’s term.

Sutton has more than an endorsement from Mangieri, he’s appeared in ads and is chairing her campaign.

Now she also has the support of two Illinois politicians; Sen. Dick Durbin and Rep. Cheri Bustos. Sutton says she’s grateful for the pair’s support in separate press releases.

Durbin, who is also the second-ranking Democrat in the U.S. Senate, and sits on the Senate Judiciary Committee, says he rarely makes endorsements in state judicial races.

He says that she is the “only candidate with experience and character necessary”, mentioning her handling cases in nearly all areas of Illinois law.

Bustos also highlights what she considers Sutton’s edge in experience, including sitting on the bench for the past year after being appointed after Mangieri’s retirement.

“Judge Sutton has proven that hse is knowledgeable, ethical, and just. She is the only candidate with judicial experience and the only candidate to have experience in areas across the spectrum of Illinois law.”

Judge Sutton had also received a “recommended” rating from a poll of members of the Illinois State Bar Association.

Sutton has not been a prosecutor but did have a broad range of civil cases in private practice. She was a partner with Lucie, Scalf, Sutton, and Bougher in Macomb and practiced law in Quincy.  She also was a law clerk at the appellate court level with Justice Robert W. Cook in the Fourth Appellate District of Illinois.
