Trustees of Carl Sandburg College will consider the approval of the tentative tax levies for the year 2020 at tonight’s board meeting.

Administrators are predicting an Equalized Assessed Value or EAV increase of three percent for a total tax base of over two billion dollars for the tax year 2020.

The proposed tax levy for the year is $13,138,389, an increase of last year’s tax levy of $390,584. The tax rate would come to around $0.64. Last year, trustees approved a levy of over $12,800,000 with a nearly identical tax rate of $0.64.

The school will be levying a tax for protection, health, and safety purposes, which would be the resurfacing of Tom L. Wilson Boulevard and for the replacement of the building automation controls.

Sandburg was recently the recipient of over $422,000 from the State of Illinois Capital Development Board to fund the school’s longstanding RAMP project.

The community college is looking to match the grant with local funds of $141,000 to resurface the eastern half of the road connecting Sandburg to South Lake Story road.

The school’s other project would see the out of date building automation controls be replaced. The new system would allow the college to monitor and adjust building HVAC settings for increased efficiency.

Replacement of the college’s electrical system is also anticipated to be released as some parts of it are original and were installed over 40 years before.

That project cost is expected to be to the tune of $800,000.

Both projects are anticipated to be bid out by May of next year with completion expected in the summer or fall.
