Galesburg firefighters battle Wednesday evening blaze

Firefighters from all three Galesburg stations responded to a structure fire on McClure Street Wednesday evening.

According to a release from the city, 11 firefighters arrived at around 5:30 to 990 McClure where smoke was showing from the vents in the attic of the structure.

Battalion Chief Donald Brackett assumed command and the Central Fire Station crew made entry and extinguished the fire in the attic.

While battling the blaze in the attic, one firefighter fell through the ceiling onto stairs going into the basement.

He was taken by Galesburg Hospital Ambulance Service to OSF St. Mary’s Medical Center, treated, and then released.

An emergency callback was initiated of the preceding shift to provide emergency coverage for the city.

Fire damage was contained to the attic and estimated to be around $5,000.

Galesburg Fire Department Investigators determined the cause of the fire to be accidental.
