Man arrested for a slew of gun charges after holding three at gunpoint

On Wednesday, December 2nd, Galesburg Police responded to the 1300 block of Carl Sandburg Drive. Police received reports of an armed male subject in one of the apartments. Upon arrival, police made contact with the four individuals inside the reported armed subject was seated facing the front door with his arms in the air. According to police reports, police detained the subject who had two firearm magazines on him without incident.
Police then spoke to all the occupants of the apartment who all told police that 28-year old Max Matiala of Galesburg came to the apartment looking for his television and Roku stick. Once Matiala learned that his television wasn’t there, he became very upset and pulled a handgun. He locked the apartment door, pointed the gun at each individual, and told them they weren’t going anywhere. When police arrived, Matiala placed the gun in a duffel bag. Matiala was also the one to call the police for a standby due to a language barrier. He was arrested for Armed Violence, Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon, Unlawful Use of a Weapon, and Unlawful Restraint. Inside Matiala’s duffel bag police also found body armor. He’ll be in court on December 15th.
