The Abingdon-Avon School District went to remote learning after Thanksgiving and will remain that way until January 19th.

Superintendent Dr. Mike Curry says that the board decided to move in this direction as cases both in the district and the community started to rise.

“Our cases here were pretty high both in the community and at the school,” Curry told WGIL on Thursday. “So with the Thanksgiving gatherings and upcoming Christmas gatherings, the board actually approached me with the idea of this long-term pause.”

Curry adds that the board was validated by their decision just before Thanksgiving several students had to be quarantined because of a single case.

“A couple of days before Thanksgiving break, the [Knox County Health Department] put 18 kids in quarantine. So, if done right, they wouldn’t have been at the Thanksgiving table and that was kind of an ‘eye-opener’ for a lot of people. From one positive in one of our buildings, between transportation and classrooms… proximity – 18 kids.”

Curry says people will be getting together during Christmas and celebrating the New Year’s holiday, leading to the board recommending staying with remote learning from Thanksgiving Break to the middle of January.
