Margaret “Peg” Bivens of Knoxville passed away unexpectedly last Wednesday but leaves behind a legacy of service to her community that is vast.

Those who knew Bivens are remembering her as “kind”, “wise”, “selfless”, and a “pillar of the community.”

Bivens was 66 years old when she passed, but was still very active in business and the community.

She was a Knoxville Alderman for four years in the ’90s, acted as City Clerk for a decade, and currently was serving as Knoxville CityTreasurer.

Bivens was an insurance agent for over 40 years according to her obituary from Hurd-Hendricks Funeral Home. Bivens started her career at Lacy-England Insurance Agency which she would eventually become Owner/Operator of, right up until her passing.

Bivens also was a founding member and on the board of the Knoxville Community Fund. The fund was started in 2015 when the Galesburg Community Foundation had a program that matched organizations that established an endowment to a certain level. The KCF then disburses dollars to non-profits, churches, schools and government agencies to enhance the quality of life in the community.

Visitation for Bivens will be held Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Hurd Hendricks Funeral Home in Knoxville. A private burial will then be held. Memorials to honor the life of Bivens can be donated to the Knoxville Public Library or to the Knox County Historical sites.
