
John A. Funk, 81 of Abingdon, passed away at 11:36 a.m. Sunday, December 20, 2020, at Unity Point Health Pekin in Pekin, Illinois. He was born March 11, 1939, in Kirksville, Missouri, the son of Vernon and Alpha (Peavler) Funk. He married Vera Dodd on February 13, 1960, in Kirksville. John is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Vera; one daughter, Terry (Rick Jones) Funk of Abingdon; two sons, Steve (Judy) Funk of Taylorville and Mark (Terri) Funk of Columbus, Ohio; and two grandchildren, Justin Funk and Rachael Funk. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Buddy Funk, and one sister, Paul Ann Lynn. In 1957, he graduated from Hurdland High School in Hurdland, Missouri. John worked in maintenance at Protexall in Galesburg and then worked as a paramedic at Proctor Hospital in Peoria and later for GHAS in Galesburg. He served as Chief of Police for the City of Abingdon beginning in 1994 and he retired in March of 2001. He currently was serving as First Ward Alderman for the City of Abingdon. He was an avid Green Bay Packer fan and his hobbies included mushroom hunting, fishing, and spending time with family and friends.
As he requested, cremation will be accorded and no services will be held.
