Friday, February 12th, just before 4:30 am, Galesburg Police were dispatched to the Sandburg Village Apartments on Home Boulevard where a female caller reported a home intruder. The woman said she woke up to see a man standing in her bedroom doorway wearing her coat. The suspect had also removed his shoes after entering the apartment. The residents chased the man out of the apartment. The woman’s four children ages 9-months to 9 years old were also in the apartment. According to police reports, less than an hour later, GPD received calls of a second break-in at the same complex. During the second incident, residents returned home to find two unknown male subjects locked in a bedroom. An altercation ensued, and the male subjects fled. A 14-year old and a 7-year-old juvenile were also home at the time. A short time later, one of the residents identified one of the subjects and another altercation took place. This time, the unknown (and shoeless) intruder was held down until police arrived. The second male subject wasn’t found. Police identified the intruder as 30-year old Joshua Eckart with a listed address of Mahomet, Illinois who claimed to be staying in a vacant apartment. He told police that he is new to the Galesburg area, was intoxicated, and a friend talked him into breaking into the apartment. Eckart also told police he returned to the original apartment to apologize. Eckart was charged with Felony Home Invasion, Felony Residential Burglary, and a Peoria County Warrant for Domestic Battery. He was transported to the Knox County Jail.
